History
In
1904, Robert H. Stokes established R. H. Stokes Funeral Service.
The funeral parlor was located on East Grand Avenue in Eau
Claire. In 1917, Robert established the first motorized ambulance
service also in Eau Claire. He died in 1940.
In 1941, Robert’s two sons, Vernon and Wallace, purchased
the Coca Cola plant on 775 First Avenue. They added on to
the building and converted it to the first funeral chapel
in the area. In December of 1942, the chapel opened and thousands
of Eau Claire residents attended the open house. The new funeral
chapel featured a formal chapel with stationary pews and an
altar and was very church-like. They flourished for fifty-nine
years at the First Avenue location and became one of the largest
funeral establishments in the area.
In 2001, Stokes and Mundt Funeral Chapel and Crematory moved
to 535 South Hillcrest Parkway in Altoona.
In
2007, Randy and Jean Mundt acquired Prock Funeral Home, Ltd.
and the Cremation Society of Wisconsin. The Mundt’s
purchased Prock Funeral Home, Ltd. and the Cremation Society
of Wisconsin because the nature of funeral service has changed.
This change is due to an increase in cremation services. This
shift has created a financial climate of mergers and consolidations
for funeral home real estate. With rising cremation rates,
it’s both logical and economical to operate out of one
building instead of two. Stokes, Prock & Mundt Funeral
Chapel and Crematory and the Cremation Society of Wisconsin
are all under one roof, providing more choices and savings
for the consumer.
